Farrah Willis

Hi! My name is Farrah Willis (new last name in May of 2008!).  I am currently a third year Master of Divinity student at Drew Theological School in Madison, NJ.  I was born into an Air Force family, so I am a military brat.  I moved around quite a bit growing up and attended base chapels, United Methodist churches (where I was confirmed), Catholic churches, Baptist churches, etc.  I called myself simply a “Christian” for some time.  I eventually came to the decision that I would be a full-fledged United Methodist after college and am now on the track towards ordination in the UMC.  I'm currently the Student Assistant Pastor at The United Methodist Church in Madison in Madison, NJ.

While I have been in seminary, I have come learn particular terminology which has named what I was griping about prior to coming to seminary.  What I mean by this are the things I wanted to see changed about how we “do church” these days.  I am now interested in dialog about how we can “be church” in a “postmodern” (loaded term) world.  This includes getting out of the church building and reaching out to the communities around us, especially those who are socially marginalized.  The term “missional” defines this attribute of how we can be church and something I am quite passionate about in addition to living a Christian faith 24/7 in community.

Outside of how I grew up and what intrigues me about our future in ministry, I have some fun things I like to do to keep myself occupied.  For instance, one of my hobbies is photography.  Although I love dark-room photography (yes, it’s from the Jurassic PeriodJ), I am learning to appreciate the versatility of digital photography.  I also love to bake and have a dream of owning a bakery one day.  Traveling is also high on the list, as it was kind of a way of life I learned being a military brat.  Getting out into nature and appreciating God’s creation is something that soothes my soul.  And these days, in addition to thinking about church planting, my life is consumed with wedding planning.  Matt and I are getting married in May of 2008 and there are a lot of details to cover!
